Prep Time: 20 minutes Cook Time: 50 minutes

Recipe adapted from Sister Cook

Equipment:

Large dutch oven

Ingredients:

  • 1 (55 oz) can baked beans

  • 10 strips peppered bacon, diced (regular works too)

  • ½ onion, diced

  • 1 red or green bell pepper, diced (red preferred)

  • ⅓ to ½ cup brown sugar, to taste

  • ½ to ¾ bottle of your favorite BBQ sauce, to taste

  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard (adjust to taste)

  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

  • Ground black pepper, to taste

Directions:

  1. Heat a Dutch oven over medium heat.

  2. Add the diced bacon, onion, and bell pepper. Cook until the vegetables are soft and the bacon begins to crisp.

  3. Stir in the baked beans.

  4. Add brown sugar, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, cayenne (if using), and black pepper. Stir to combine.

  5. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat and simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  6. Taste and adjust sweetness or smokiness with more brown sugar or BBQ sauce as desired.

Serve hot as a side with burgers, hot dogs, or your favorite grilled meats!
